LPG price revisions and your godown stock

By the DeskGas team · Updated

Oil companies revise LPG prices, most visibly for commercial cylinders at the start of a month. Every revision changes the value of the filled stock you are holding. Here is how to account for it.

In short

  • Stock gain or loss = filled cylinders on the effective date × change in price, for each product.
  • Record the new prices from the date in the SMS, not the day you happened to read it.
  • Keep every price version; a mid-month revision is normal.

How often prices change

Commercial cylinder prices are commonly revised on the 1st of the month; for example, the 19 kg commercial price was cut by ₹51.50 from 1 September 2025. Domestic prices change less often. Distributors are told by SMS with the effective date and the new rate for each product.

Working out the gain or loss

Example only. On the 1st, XYZ Gas Agency has 120 filled 19 kg cylinders in the godown, bought before the revision. If the price falls by ₹51.50, the stock is worth 120 × 51.50 = ₹6,180 less. If prices rise, it is a gain.

This is a real part of the month's margin, but it is not trading skill. Show it separately so a good month caused by a price rise is not mistaken for a good month of sales.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Selling at the new price from the effective date while the register still shows the old price
  • Missing a mid-month revision
  • Loading the rate SMS of another agency code
  • Changing the price of days already closed without a record

How DeskGas helps

Paste the rate SMS. DeskGas reads every product, checks the distributor code, saves a price version from the effective date, and shows the gain or loss on your filled stock. It also makes a price card to share with customers on WhatsApp.
